Cars were parked

sculptures in various stages of completion.
Mark Jeffrey was putting the
finishing touches on a tree frog which he and his two helpers were shading with
a couple of beach umbrellas to stop it from drying out and falling apart.
"We were going with the theme of international year of forests,Shop for

sitting on a sloping log made of sand and had large toes for climbing and

Jeffrey said he has missed past competitions
because they are usually held on Saturdays when he has to work. This year the
event was postponed a day because of heavy rains.

neared completion of a sculpture depicting a family of sea turtles.
"It
started out as a sandcastle and we ended up with a mommy turtle with her babies
as well as an alligator in a swamp," said Sabrina Roche.
She was another
first timer who arrived around 8:30 a.m. when the tide was still high and began
working as the water receded.
A mammoth structure based on the ancient
Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat also rose from the sand flats. "It is one of the
seven man-made wonders of the world," said Lisa Little, who had a team helping

She was doing the finish work, sculpting the
individual bricks and the Buddha-like face on one side of the temple. The
hardest part was making the pile of sand big enough for the project in the
morning, Little said. Earlier this year she had a chance to see the real temple
in Cambodia and it was still acting as an inspiration.

truck from the Pixar animated film Cars 2, released last month, was the
inspiration for a sculpture by Jason Gomke.
With seashells for
headlights and styrofoam found on the beach for the grill, the boxy little
number was unmistakable and appeared ready to race away on another adventure.
A guy who obviously knew what he was doing, had garden trowels for
sculpting and paint brushes for creating a smooth finish as he worked on a giant
octopus.
Will Reinhart said he has participated in the competition a few
times and picked up a few tools to create the look he wants. Last year his team
came in first overall.
The head of his octopus with its beady eyes was
on one side of a hill of sand with tentacles cascading down the other guarding a
treasure chest and a skull.
"I think it may be a sunken ship or
something because we have a few skulls here," he said. The rain delay didn't put

Instead it gave him a little more time to think about what he was going to do,
Reinhart said.
Further down the beach three perfectly proportioned
pyramids rose next to a sarcophagus containing the remains of King Tut. "My
brother wanted an Egyptian theme, but I didn't think it would be doable," said

The outline of the
king's mummy was clearly visible on top as she worked on the finishing touches
around the edges and sides of the tomb.
All along the beach it was a
party atmosphere. Music blasted from the picnic area and New Brunswickers got to
enjoy a real taste of summer that has been a long time in coming.
