With the Tri-state under an excessive heat watch from now through
Saturday evening, five air-conditioned facilities will be available in
Henderson this week to serve as cooling centers for those needing
relief.
While most of the local the cooling centers aren't open
24 hours, "The idea is to get people out of the heat of the day,"
Henderson Emergency Management Director Larry Koerber said.
"These
are cooling centers," he said. "There is no food or drink or bedding
provided; it's just a place to sit down in the cool," such as for those
who have no air conditioning at home.
Officially, the cooling
centers will be open through this Friday, although two of the
facilities are also open Saturdays and Sundays.
Meanwhile, the
American Red Cross Cardinal Chapter still has some electric fans
available for those in need, Director Susan Sauls said Monday.
It
acquired fans thanks to funds from the Papa John's pizza chain, which
donated $1 to the Red Cross for each pizza sold last Wednesday as part
of the Papa John's Fan Club program, she said.
