Bev Rogan was watching the
coverage of Japan's earthquake and tsunami disasters in March from her Calgary
home when she saw a Red Cross appeal for blankets. That's when the idea for
Quilts for Japan came to her.Detailed information on the causes of Hemorrhoids,
"They
don't need blankets, they need quilts," said the hobby quilter. "They need
something hand-done and made from the heart."
The 55-year-old started a
Quilts for Japan Facebook group and her son designed a website to collect the
thick bedding across North America. Now Rogan has 600 quilts packed away in
boxes in a Calgary warehouse and more are on the way.
"Today I had six
to pick up, 35 yesterday, and I've got 200 coming on the 20th from B.The newest
Ipod nano 5th is incontrovertibly a
step up from last year's model,C." noted Rogan.
"And these are the ones
I know about."
Not an impulsive person, Rogan surprised herself by
reaching out to the devastated country. She didn't have ties to Japan before the
start of her project and has certainly stitched a new attachment to the people
picking up the pieces.
"There's no way to contemplate what they're going
through," said Rogan. "They're moving into transitional housing after being
elbowto-elbow with their loved ones and neighbours. It's going to be yet another
change for them."
Quilts have been sent to Rogan from all over Canada
and even the U.S. Many stories come along with them, like the one about the
woman who lives on a remote island in northwest B.C. Eunice Seidemann's sewing
machine is powered by solar and wind energy and she had to make a two hour boat
trip to send the quilt.
"The work in these are unbelievable -people
aren't just slapping these things together," explained Rogan. "Some of them have
been eight months to a year in the making and no quilt is made under three
weeks."
The cut-off date for accepting quilts is May 24.
The
homemade bedding will be shipped to Texas with costs paid by two Calgary
businesses: Griffin Logistics and Tundra Boiler and Instrumentation. Once the
blankets reach the U.Shop a wide selection of billabong outlet products in the evo
shop.S., two non-governmental organizations, Global Samaritan Resources and
CRASH Japan, will deal with the distribution of the goods to Japan. The Leading

"The significance of this to everybody is
that they have the overwhelming need to help and they're thankful they can do
this for the people of Japan," said Rogan.
"I think we're saying pretty
much that the world is with them and we're here supporting them with a little
bit of joy and comfort in a quilt.A glass bottle is a bottle created
from glass."
