Tina Powell is mourning the
loss of seven dogs, a kitten and all of her belongings in a fire last week at
her rented home on Cleveland Avenue SE.
She's also grateful that someone
cared enough to help.
Powell went to sleep June 30 with the six
Chihuahuas, which have taken to bedding down with her since her husband, John,

A man driving by saw the fire and pounded on her door to wake
her. She doesn't know who the good Samaritan is.
"There was very little
smoke in my room," she said. "But once you opened the door, it was all black. I
found my way to the door, and he pulled me out," she said.
A passing
ambulance called in the fire, said East Sparta Chief Arnold Adams. Firefighters
stopped Powell from going back in after the dogs.
Her memory of the fire

When she returned home, she found most of her belongings outside the
house, along with several walls missing. She said there's nothing to salvage.
The American Red Cross helped her with temporary housing, but now she's looking
for somewhere to live.

said the cause has yet to be determined, but "the wiring in the house was very
substandard."
He had no monetary estimate of damage, but said Powell's
